Stuff That I'm Reading.

This is a blog. About stuff. That I'm reading.

My very first Cannonball Review (aww).

I just finished writing up Tana French’s Faithful Place for Pajiba’s 3rd Annual Cannonball Read. I’m so excited to be participating in it this year! It’s like a marathon of reading, and since I’m a godawful runner, this is the only kind of marathon I have even a small chance of completing.

From the CB3 blog: “The Cannonball Read got its start in September 2008 on Pajiba as a battle royale between Prisco and AlabamaPink.  The race was on to see who could read 100 books first within a year’s time.  Other ‘Jibans wanted in, so they opened the competition to all who were willing to take up the challenge.  Sadly, our Warrior Queen left us before she could complete the race, but Prisco and other participants forged on.

In the fall of 2009, a second Cannonball Read was organized.  This time, over 100 ‘Jibans wanted in.  Probably helped by the fact that the number of books to be read was made a bit more attainable, 52 in a year, though this year, reviews of books read were required.  Thirteen participants made it to the the end; reading and reviewing 52 books between November 1, 2009 & October 31, 2010.  For all of those who completed the challenge and to honor Miss Pink, a donation was made by Pajiba to the college fund for her son, Lil A.

And that brings us to Cannonball Read III.  This year we’ve made a few more changes.  First, for easier tracking of start and end dates, we’re pushing back the beginning of CBR-III to January 1, 2011.  Second, to encourage as many participants as possible, we introduced levels to the Cannonball Read.  The full Cannonball is still 52 books, but folks can also sign up for a Half Cannonball, 26 books, or a Quarter Cannonball, 13 books.  The goal of CBR-III is to have more people reading and, of course, to continue to honor AlabamaPink.  For all of those who complete the Whole Cannonball, Dustin Rowles, publisher of Pajiba, will make another donation to Lil A’s college fund.”

How to lose 30 dollars and not even feel bad about it:

Sit down to look at budget.

Get tangled with laptop wire, drop laptop, break cooling pad.

Computer seems to be fine.

Awesome.

I sort of love Patti Smith in a way that’s a lot like hating her.

Whenever I’m sad that I’m profoundly and utterly unmusical I think “It be ok! I get writing!” Then there are people like Patti Smith. Thanks for doing ALL the cool things, you fabulous bitch. What am I supposed to tell myself now?

Anthropologie, WTF?
A DOG PINAFORE.

Anthropologie, WTF?

A DOG PINAFORE.

4 episodes in, I still can’t tell whether Misfits is a good show or not.

That probably means it’s bad, right?

My favorite British TV discovery of the year? The IT Crowd

Also, it occurred to me that the term for a one-person one-song dance party that you have at your house as a way to take a break from reading should be ‘dancerbation’. Unfortunately, this is already

a) a porn thing, apparently, where women dance while masturbating (?) (!)

b) a term for getting freaky on the dance floor with others.

People! None of these activities have the same kind of AHAHAHA-no-one-is-watching-me-fail-to-do-the-worm joy that dancing by yourself has. It’s that combination of joy and shame that so closely aligns this activity with masturbation.

The Sam Cooke station on Pandora is really expressing the melancholy I feel at not having finished this book today, for school. NOW I HAVE TO CHANGE MY GMAIL CALENDAR ACCORDINGLY. Tragic.

It is, however, really good. So far. Grumble. Grumble.

Yay, x-mas!

Here’s a lazy little recording I did of White Christmas some time ago.  I wish I had my recording stuff down here so I could record another Christmas jam or two!
